6-week Beginner’s Course starts Thursday 15th May, 6 consecutive weeks with Vivianne 6pm – 7.15pm - £66

The Light Centre’s Pilates Beginners and improver’s courses take you from first steps to a real understanding of the principles of Pilates.

It introduces you to the key postures, to core stability, pelvic neutrality, breathing techniques, philosophy and relaxation.

These basic ingredients will then be brought together to form a sequences of exercises that will allow you to attend open classes with confidence and build your own self-practice routine.

The six-week beginners course is suitable for absolute beginners and also for those who want to return to the basics in order to revisit the foundation of their practice and understanding.

Once you’ve attended one of our Beginners Courses (or a number of classes) then you’ll be ready for our six-week Improvers course on Tuesdays at 5.30pm.

The courses are taught by Vivianne Jonsson, Ann Hudson and Carmela Trappa. Their training in Foundation Pilates and extensive work with students make their teaching both formative and pleasurable.

Cost for each six-week course: £60/£66 (see above)

There are limited places so early booking is essential.

Pilates beginners with Vivienne Jonsson

During this Beginners course you will learn about the principles and fundamentals that we believe to be important basic knowledge when practicing Pilates exercises, i.e.:

  • Concentration/Focus - That all-important mind-body connection. Conscious control of movement enhances body awareness.
  • Control/Precision - It's not about intensity or multiple "reps," it's more about proper form for safe, effective results.
  • Centering/Strength - A mental focus within the body calms the spirit. A particular focus on the torso (abs, pelvic girdle, lower back, gluts), as develops a strong core and enables the rest of the body to function efficiently. All action initiates from the trunk and flows outwards to the extremities.
  • Stabilizing, posture, neutral spine - Before you move you have to be still. Makes for a safe starting place for mobility.
  • Breathing - Deep, coordinated, conscious diaphragmatic patterns of inhales and exhales initiate movement, help activate deep muscles and keep you focused.
  • Alignment (placement) - Correct alignment is key to good posture. You'll be aware of the position of your head and neck on the spine and pelvis, right down through the legs and toes.
  • Flow - Smooth, continuous motion rather than jarring repetitions. Pilates has a grace and elegance to it.
Integration - Several different muscle groups are engaged simultaneously to control and support movement. All principles come together, making for a holistic
    mind-body workout.
