Massage can be either rehabilative or relaxing.
Rehabilative massage involves the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function and aid in the healing process.
Rehabilative styles include deep tissue, sports and Thai massage. They tend to be painful because They attempt to break muscle cross fibres and restore flow and function to congested tissues.
Relaxing massage, whilst promoting circulation and therefore good health, tends to be much more gentle, relaxing and enjoyable.
More relaxing styles include aromatherapy, Swedish and holistic massage.
