The History of Reflexology

The practice of Reflexology can be traced back as far as ancient Egyptian times and has also been used by the Native American Indians as a method of pain relief.  In modern times Reflexology was further developed in the USA by Physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, which resulted in the detailed mapping of reflex points in the feet leading to the main form of Reflexology used today.  The Ingham method was then introduced to the UK in the 1960’s by one of her students, Doreen Bayly.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing therapy, which is based on the theory that every organ, structure and part of the body is mirrored in the feet and that any problem or tension in the body is reflected in the related part of the foot. Stimulation of these reflex points has the effect of re-balancing the body and encouraging its natural healing mechanisms, providing the right environment for positive change to take place.

Further benefits include:
      - Relief from stress and tension
      - Deep relaxation
      - Increased energy levels
      - Greater feelings of well-being
      - Improved circulation and lymphatic drainage
      - Boosted immunity
      - Detoxification

How can Reflexology Help?

Reflexology does not claim to cure or diagnose specific conditions.  As a holistic therapy it treats the whole person rather than symptoms that they may be experiencing at any given time.  For example if an individual were suffering from frequent Migraines they may gain relief from them whilst at the same time noticing an improvement in their general health, energy levels and quality of sleep.  It should never be used in place of essential medical treatment, though in many cases it can aid the recovery process and provide a beneficial accompaniment.

Who can Benefit from Treatment?

Reflexology is a safe, non-invasive therapy, which is suitable for all ages and has proved to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including:

      - Migraine & Headache
      - Insomnia
      - Fatigue
      - Anxiety
      - Hormonal Imbalance
      - Digestive Disorders
      - Arthritis
      - And many others

What will Happen During my Treatment?

Sessions are one hour in duration, allowing 10-15 minutes consultation time prior to treatment. However, the consultation prior to your first treatment may be slightly longer to allow time for a full case history to be obtained.  This will include details of your past and current medical health, which will enable the Reflexologist to tailor an individualised treatment plan.  During this time you can also discuss any lifestyle factors that may be having a negative effect on your health and well-being and suggestions may be made on how to make beneficial improvements.
