Projects Currently Underway
Light Centre Green Roof Project
The Green Roof project is now underway and the first potted plants are flourishing. A core group of permaculture enthusiasts are meeting regularly to learn and participate. The garden is now open on Thursday lunchtimes from 12.30pm to 2pm for anyone to come and take a look. If you’d still like to get involved in this group then simply email Rakesh at rootsmanrak@yahoo.co.uk.
Transition Town Pimlico
Transition Town Pimlico is also now underway. It is the coordination point for a number of diverse projects including the greening of Pimlico, community food growing projects; low carbon transport (such as how to make Boris bikes more affordable to low income earners) and the creation of an energy descention plan. , To join this group simply click on the following link http://transitionpimlico.wiggio.com
1. First click on ‘Not a member of Transition Pimlico Yet’ 2. It will ask you for a group password, which is ttpimlico 3. Then enter your email address.
Follow the on screen instructions, which are quite straight forward. You can then optionally join any of the sub groups depending on your interest (Food coop group; Light centre green roof or learning permaculture).
Pimlico Food coop
The Coop’s goal is to make good quality, organic and ethically sourced foods and consumables available to local people at wholesale prices.
The advantages are: reducing food miles and packaging by cutting out the retailer and buying in bulk and splitting items between a local group. Splitting 25kg of something (e.g. rice) between 10 or more people means we can all buy 1kg to 5kg each according to our needs, but pay wholesale prices. On average the items are between 30 and 40% cheaper then in a shop.
Typical orders include many organic and ethically sourced products, such as: various lentils and beans e.g. aduki, mung, yellow split peas, red split lentils, chickpeas, etc; various grains e.g. brown rice, millet, pearl barley, oats, also oat flakes and other breakfast cerials; spreads e.g. peanut butter, fruit preserves, tahini, etc. Drinks such as teas, juice concentrats, rice, oat and soya milks. Oils such as toasted sesame, sunflower olive, etc. Seeds such as alfalfa, brocolli, sunflower, sesame. Dried fruits, such as raisins, figs, apricots, etc. The catalogue also includes non edibles, such as ecover and other laundry and washing up liquids, shampoos, soap nuts, toothpastes. Spirulina, and other herbal medicines seem to be popular too, as are seaweeds, tofu, tempeh and flour.
If you are interested in getting joining the Coop or finding out more then either, sign up to the food coop sub group on the wiggio site http://transitionpimlico.wiggio.com or indicate your interest at the next film night or coop meeting.
